Hermanus, all but Whales

When you think of Hermanus , its synonymous with Whales, but I wanted to discover whether the town had more to offer . So with no plan I entered the town and checked into the Old Madam. You won’t find that name there; it’s actually called Windsor Hotel in Marine Drive. It's right opposite the ocean so for therapy this is the perfect place. Any day here is a perfect time.

While checking in, I was met with friendly staff at the counter. If you are looking for a modern, slick place, then this is not your deal. The hotel is the oldest in Hermanus and reminds me of that rich, old lady from England that is sweet, friendly and inviting. She treats you to some tea and biscuits, while sitting on a winged- back chair covered in Biggy Best material. Upon entering, there are pictures of yesteryear giving you an idea of what life was about in that era. The floors are so retro with antiques all around.

Since she gave me this feeling, I decided to baptise her as the Old Madam. The morning we were met with a healthy breakfast and a view that spoke into my soul.  When enquiring about gems in the town, I was given a few options and one of these was to do the Hemel en Aarde Wine Route.

 

So off we went on our road tour to view some wine farms. As we travelled along we were met by such beautiful scenery along the way until we hit road works. We waited along one of the stops for around 10 minutes. We then proceeded to our first stop which was Domaine Dex Dieux. The downer was that when we got there the lounge for wine tasting was closed for the day. We were not deterred by this and got back on the dirt road to Creation Wine Farm, which was right next door.

No one could have prepared us for what was about to happen.  One of the meanings of Creation is to bring into existence, invent or produce.  There are many accolades that this farm has, but I think that more than what they offer and believe me that it is phenomenal; the hands that serve you are pure grace.

As we entered the venue there was such a buzz and I quickly learnt that if you want to have an experience, make an appointment. Luckily for us the staff who values each person who steps inside their space as important, made a plan. We were seated at an antique table close to the garden, saving the best seat in the house. This allowed for a cool breeze and the prospect to view a few of the projects they are involved in. The furniture on the outside was produced by the JOSHUA tree , which uses recycled products with creativity for employment. How cool is that. Check them out at www.thejoshuatree.co.za .

The “Martha” of Creation, Carolyn Martin which I also learnt was the owner, told me the following: “At Creation we believe that good wines deserve to be enjoyed with good food. That’s why innovative wine pairing, with scrumptious canapés complementing each wine, is an integral part of the Creation experience.” This is truly such a humble woman creating new heights within the food industry, she gives pairing a new dimension . It’s all about DISCOVERY- with your ‘pallet of paradise.'

Honestly the pairing and knowledge gained was far beyond my expectation, but it was the people , especially the manner in which Carolyn hosted us ,that intrigued me. While engaging with me she would still ensure that all her guests were seen to. A very hands-on lady indeed.  

There are many various creations of tasting available even a non-alcoholic. The secret is in the  flavour and texture and how the inherent qualities of wine and food can combine to create the ultimate taste sensation. So the best thing to do, is to see whether my story adds up and visit for yourself.  

The anything but whales has proved that #HermanusOnTour cannot be done in one day. I have decided to go back and discover more hidden jewels and will hopefully have another story to tell.
