THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM - PART 1

Jerome and Bronwyn Pillay are the proud parents of their first born, a gorgeous baby girl Kiara. Her journey however in this world started with a challenge.

Kiara was diagnosed with a heart condition at 18 days old and needed open heart surgery to rectify her condition. After many discussions and check ups with the pediatrician and cardiologist they were under the impression that things would work out given the advanced technology.

We were informed that a panel of specialists at Sunninghill Hospital were diagnosing Kiara’s results and found that her condition is a rare one and extremely complicated that none of the surgeons can attend to in South Africa. There were only 2 recommended Cardiac Surgeons that were recognised for specialising with this condition. Dr Frank Hanley from the USA and the second is Dr David Barron from Birmingham and the UK.

We were also informed that the surgery would have to be done sooner than expected as her condition were getting worse by day, latest  in a month to two . The surgery costs amounted to approximately 40 000 pounds for Dr Barron and would have to be done abroad. This would exclude her days in the ward after ICU. The estimated amount was standing on 1 million rand.

The medical aid was contacted but they would only cover part of the cost. This family was in turmoil,
there is no payment plan available for the surgery of this nature and it would have to be a cash payment. These parents like any other were prepared to give their lives for their daughter, but they had an elephant in the room. Their hands were tied.

For part two tune in next week to get the full picture.
